European Policy Centre

On July 8, 2021, Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs magazine, took part in an online discussion of European Policy Centre, titled “The Biden-Putin Summit: What Next and What Implications for the EU?”.

The Biden-Putin Summit: What Next and What Implications for the EU?
European Policy Centre

The Summit between Presidents Biden and Putin on 16 June in Geneva was aimed at bringing more stability and predictability to relations.  With US-Russia relations at their lowest point since the Cold War period, the bar was set very low. Nevertheless, some baby steps were taken, including an agreement to launch a substantive dialogue on strategic stability, as well as the return of their ambassadors to their respective duties and workplaces. However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and it remains to be seen whether President Putin, who thrives on unpredictability, will genuinely engage in the process.

This on-line Policy Dialogue brought American, European, and Russian perspectives on the summit outcomes and what’s next for US-Russia cooperation. The following issues were discussed at the impact on the EU and the potential implications for the European security situation and transatlantic trust.

Biden’s Summitry Was Reassuring for the West. Now Comes the Hard Part

Transatlantic relations were boosted by nearly a week of summits marking U.S. President Joe Biden’s first diplomatic travels. But the months ahead will test the ability of alliances, great powers, and multilateral groups to advance global health, security, and economic opportunity, as well as whether the United States can lead the effort, say experts at leading global think tanks, featuring, among others, Fyodor Lukyanov.
