In this episode of #ThePrintUninterrupted, Fyodor Lukyanov tells ThePrint's Senior Consulting Editor Jyoti Malhotra that the people of Russia support President Vladimir Putin in the conflict against Ukraine, that the West wants to weaken Russia via the Ukraine conflict, that Russia is trying to evolve an alternative world order to that of the West, that China and Russia are in the same boat today vis-a-vis the US and that India's politics have become even more interesting.

On November 29 the seminar 'What’s Next?: The Relations between Russia and the West in a Time of Uncertainty?' was held at HSE University, featuring Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of Russia in Global Affairs, and Marlene Laruelle, Director and Research Professor at the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES), Elliott School of International Affairs, The George Washington University.

The year 2022 turned everything inside out. With the benefit of hindsight – having overcome the shock everyone experienced in February, when Russian troops entered Ukraine – it’s not that difficult to explain how it came about. And even how it could not have been otherwise. Also, after a full ten months, it is pretty clear why the campaign did not go as planned.

Last year’s events undid what was before in all respects: political, economic, humanitarian, and military. Everything will now be built differently, because there is really no way back.

Nobody has any doubts that what is happening now in Ukraine is not simply a regional conflict but a test for the current international hierarchy. Predictions of the outcome would be woefully premature in any case, but one can try to imagine which principles may form the foundation of a future system of global co-existence and which will be relegated to the past.

Participation in BRICS becomes a sign of belonging to a world that is emerging beyond established Western dominance. It does not necessarily have to be about confrontation.
