The Central Asian countries clearly intend to develop relations with all major powers other than Russia with which they have longstanding ties.

The collapse of any global empire always had a profound and lasting impact on the entire world history, and the disintegration of the Soviet Union was also the case. The Soviet Union was more than just a country; it was an “empire” that united countries covering the Eurasian continent, a military alliance and a large economic association, as well as a worldwide ideology and a peculiar social system.

Moscow’s greatest success in the near abroad will be the transformation of the region into a real strategic resource, and its biggest failure will be its transformation into a strategic burden for Russia.

This report presents the results of analysis of the state of Russia–China relations in 2016 and the first quarter of 2017.
